RIVERSIDE – Today, July 30, 2021, DA Mike Hestrin announced the filing of charges against a man accused of shooting two people in a Corona movie theater earlier this week, killing one of the victims.
Joseph Jimenez, DOB: 12-6-2000, of the unincorporated area of Corona, has been charged with one count of murder with a sentencing enhancement of personal use of a firearm causing death, one count of attempted murder with a sentencing enhancement of personally inflicting great bodily injury and a sentencing enhancement of personal use of a firearm causing great bodily injury, and our office has also filed a special circumstance allegation of lying in wait.
Jimenez is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. today in Dept. 53 at the Hall of Justice in Riverside.
On July 26, 2021, the victims in this case, Rylee Goodrich, 18, and Anthony Barajas, 19, both of Corona, attended the 9:35 p.m. showing of a movie at the Regal Edwards Theatre at the Corona at Crossings shopping center. After the movie ended, theater employees went to clean the auditorium and made the horrific discovery that the two victims had been shot in the head. Goodrich was pronounced dead at the scene and Barajas was taken to a nearby hospital where he remains on life support.
The DA’s Division of Victim Services is working closely with the families of both victims and is also assisting Rylee’s family to provide funeral expenses through the California Victim Compensation Board.
No motive for the shootings is being released at this time and there was no known connection between the victims and Jimenez. Based on the evidence provided to our office, this appears to be a random and unprovoked attack.
During the subsequent murder investigation, Corona police detectives were able to identify Jimenez as a potential suspect in the shootings. The Riverside County Gang Impact Team (GIT), which is led by the DA’s Bureau of Investigation, was asked to assist in locating Jimenez. Jimenez does not have any know gang affiliation, however GIT is often utilized in finding and arresting suspects in major violent crimes.
The evening of July 27, 2021, Corona police detectives served a search warrant in the 19000 block of Envoy Avenue in El Cerrito, outside the Corona city limits. Because this is in an unincorporated area of the county, Corona PD and GIT worked in coordination with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department at the location and Jimenez was taken into custody by GIT members. Jimenez was booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility where he is being held without the possibility of bail.
During the service of the search warrant, detectives found and seized a handgun of the same caliber as the weapon believed used in the murder.
The case, RIF2103205, is being prosecuted by Deputy DA Kevin Beecham of the DA’s Homicide Trial Team.
