INDIO – On September 23, 2025, a former Riverside County sheriff’s deputy was granted probation for the 2014 killing of Luis Morin, the father of his girlfriend's children.

Over the objection of prosecutors and several pleas from Morin's family, Oscar Rodriguez, DOB: 11/23/1981, was sentenced by the court to a one-year jail term and 10 years of probation supervision. He received 194 days of jail custody credit for time already served. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office recommended a mid-term sentence of 10 years in state prison.

“The People vehemently disagree with the recommendation from the probation department and the court's decision,” said Chief Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Garcia. “This sentence minimizes the gravity of Rodriguez's actions and the devastating impact on Mr. Morin’s family, while also disregarding the significant effort the jury devoted to reaching a just verdict. We firmly believe a stronger sentence was warranted to reflect the seriousness of this crime and to hold the defendant fully accountable.”

In June, an Indio jury convicted Rodriguez of voluntary manslaughter and found true the allegation that he personally used a firearm in the commission of the crime.

While on duty the night of January 27, 2014, Rodriguez learned of Morin’s whereabouts from Diana Perez, Morin’s former partner and Rodriguez’s then-girlfriend. Without alerting his law enforcement team, Rodriguez went to the 48-800 block of Camino Real in Coachella, where Morin was approaching the front door of his mother’s residence after attending a birthday dinner with his family.

Under the pretense of serving a felony arrest warrant, Rodriguez confronted Morin. When Morin attempted to flee, a physical struggle ensued. During the altercation Rodriguez fired his duty weapon in a single contact shot to Morin’s left side, killing him.

Evidence presented at trial revealed that Rodriguez and Perez had begun a romantic relationship after the deputy responded to multiple 911 calls Perez made regarding Morin.

The case, INF1702229-1, was prosecuted by Chief Deputy District Attorneys Jennifer Garcia and Jacob Silva.
