DA Hestrin announces nearly $2 million civil settlement with Sally Beauty Supply
August 20, 2021
RIVERSIDE – Today, Aug. 20, 2021, District Attorney Mike Hestrin announced that he and 40 other District Attorney’s and City Attorney’s Offices across the state have reached a settlement with Beauty Systems Group LLC and Sally Beauty Supply LLC, which includes more than $1.9 million in civil penalties, supplemental environmental projects, and costs.
The settlement is the culmination of a civil enforcement investigation into how Sally Beauty Supply stores improperly stored, handled, and disposed of hazardous waste products. Those items which included aerosol products, nail polish, cleaning agents, and other flammable, toxic, and corrosive materials, were unlawfully transported to area landfills instead of being taken to authorized hazardous waste disposal sites.
Under the settlement, the companies must pay $1.6 million in civil penalties, $289,982 in costs, and $25,000 in supplemental environmental projects. They must also implement certain compliance assurance programs. Of those amounts, Riverside County will receive $93,139 from civil penalties and $11,100 in costs.
At the time of the filed complaint, Sally Beauty Supply operated 32 stores in Riverside County.
The companies have cooperated during the investigation and have adopted and implemented new policies and procedures. They also have enhanced existing training programs designed to properly manage and dispose of hazardous waste products and confidential consumer information.
The complaint was filed in San Joaquin County and the final judgment was signed on Aug. 9, 2021, by San Joaquin Superior Court Judge Robert T. Waters.
The case was handled in Riverside County by Deputy District Attorney Lauren Martineau of the DA’s Environmental Protection Team.
